*In some cases the total volumes, and therefore the % of certified soy, are estimated

What do the results show?

single-sector/retail-lg.png
companies assessed, 29 responded
single-sector/food-service-lg.png
companies have committed to using 100% responsible soy
single-sector/retail-lg.png
companies have reported using a total of 607,000 tonnes of responsible soy
single-sector/food-service-lg.png
companies have committed to "no deforestation" for soy
single-sector/retail-lg.png
respondents are RTRS members

Retailers sit near the end of the supply chain and can send a powerful message to their suppliers about the need for responsible soy. It’s vital they pledge to use only deforestation- and conversion-free soy, and demand Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS) or ProTerra certification.

Encouragingly, retailers as a whole are advancing on this issue – although many still have work to do.

Which companies are performing well?

7 Swedish and Dutch retailers are "leading the way": ICA Gruppen, ICA Sverige, Axfood, Superunie, Coop Sweden, Albert Heijn and Jumbo. While food service companies generally performed poorly, Sweden’s Martin & Servera is a positive exception in the "leading the way" category.

4 companies are "well on the path": Waitrose and Marks & Spencer from the UK, alongside Ahold and Colruyt. Encouragingly, some companies that did not respond 2 years ago are now starting the journey by becoming RTRS members and working on policies. They include Nando’s and Compass Group.

Which companies need to do more?

Food service companies are lagging behind. Many are still in the starting blocks, still need to start the journey, or did not respond at all.

19 retail and food service companies out of the 48 we contacted (40%) simply didn’t respond.

Commitments to responsible soy

  • 23 of the 29 retail companies that responded (79%) are RTRS members, and almost all of them have submitted their annual progress reports (a requirement for RTRS membership).
  • 13 companies (45% of respondents) have made a commitment to use 100% responsible soy. A total of 19 companies (66% of respondents), including those specifying responsible soy, have pledged to use soy free from deforestation.
  • 24 companies (83% of respondents) calculated their soy footprint, partially or fully.
  • Companies used 1.6 million tonnes of soy in total.
